The Easons' Legacy of Learning

Sandra and Bobby Eason

Sandra and Bobby Eason are giving back to UNO, a university that has been "very good" to their family, by establishing an endowed fund for an annual scholarship in education.

Between them, Sandra and Bobby Eason have given the University of New Orleans 80 years of service. "UNO has been very good to us," they both say, before recounting how the university has affected their family members' lives.

Founding Chancellor Homer L. Hitt hired Bobby as a newly minted Ph.D., Sandra earned two advanced degrees there and daughter Connie was a Dean's List graduate with a degree in geography. Son Benjamin met the woman he would marry while they were both students, and the couple would later work at the University of New Orleans Research and Technology Park.

The Easons have influenced UNO's legacy just as much as it has influenced theirs. Bobby helped develop new academic programs, including the university's first "executive" master's degree program. As a graduate student, Sandra directed a program aimed at developing teacher preparation models and later served as a UNO Alumni Association board member, liaison to the University Senate and president of the UNO Women's Club.

Long after officially retiring, the Easons still support UNO and its students. They recently established an endowed fund, the interest from which will provide a scholarship each academic year for a UNO student pursuing a degree in education.

Asked what UNO has meant to them, Bobby responds, "It has meant a level of prosperity, a career of tremendous meaning and the satisfaction of having lived a good life."
